Notes from the carving bench

October 30, 2025

Since the 2020 pandemic, my being fortunate at attracting new customers has dwindled to a trickle. At an advanced age though, I am still constantly carving. I do have commissions from mostly word of mouth. But, In the near future I will be expanding my efforts in Hawaii where a great number of my authentic works are held. I am always available

This is it! The photo displays my entire ”workshop”. It’s portable having served me well for over 35 years working in a variety of outdoor locations . Along the way I have developed helpful tools like the pictured “lap bench” which is very useful changing carving spots mainland and Hawaii.

Just completed commission. A Hawaiian style “Newa” warriors club. The head is one piece Sonokeling from Bali. The handle is Koa that the client brought from Hawai’i. I used Brazilian pine and Rosewood to make the inlays that representshark’s teeth. Handgrip is handformed coconut rope from Pulusuk Atoll, Micronesia. Base is Hawaiian Ohia with inlays. lots of hours but I think it the result one of my best.
